Today, Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt visited Kid Appeal Learning Center in High Point on her Future-Ready Child Care Tour. The Lieutenant Governor was joined by co-owners Angela and Bruce Davis and local officials as she toured the center, spoke with educators and parents, and spent time with children.
“Our children deserve safe, nurturing environments where they can explore, thrive, and discover who they are. Instead, families are being pushed to the brink trying to find quality, affordable care,” said Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt. “I am determined to find real solutions to the child care crisis, so that every child has the opportunity to succeed.”
“Child care is in a crisis. Providers are struggling to pay teachers the wages they deserve, while still remaining affordable for families,” said Kid Appeal Learning Center Co-Owner Bruce Davis. “It is becoming increasingly harder for childcare centers to manage the cost of doing business and providing high-quality care.”
The Lieutenant Governor launched her Future-Ready Child Care Tour in April and will travel the state visiting centers and meeting with providers to identify solutions to the child care crisis. During her remarks, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted North Carolina’s Tri-Share program, which splits the cost of child care between the employer, the state government, and the individual.
Lieutenant Governor Hunt’s policy platform, Future-Ready North Carolina, champions investments in child care and early childhood education and workforce development, in part through North Carolina’s community colleges. As a member of both the State Board of Education and Community College Board, the Lieutenant Governor will also emphasize Career and College-Ready Graduate Programs.
Lieutenant Governor Hunt serves as Co-Chair of the Governor’s Task Force on Child Care and Early Education along with Senator Jim Burgin. The task force is working to find solutions to the child care crisis by identifying strengths and gaps in the current system, strengthening public and private investment in child care infrastructure, and working to recruit and retain a strong child care workforce.
