Last week, Lieutenant Governor Robinson convened a press conference and signed a letter to President Biden and his administration seeking clarity on the arrest of Awet Hagos in Gates County. Despite these efforts, the federal response has been limited, with only a perplexing remark from Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during the routine White House Press Briefing. Additionally, the White House and ICE have refused to answer questions from the North Carolina press regarding these issues.
As President Biden and Vice President Harris visit North Carolina for a campaign event today, our state is awaiting answers. It is crucial that President Biden addresses the concerns raised in the letter during his visit.
- Is Hagos on the U.S. government’s terrorist watch list?
- What are Hagos’ suspected ties to terrorist groups and/or activities?
- Is Hagos believed to be acting alone?
- Does Hagos have any known associates, friends, or family that you believe are also here?
- Does the Federal Government know how Hagos entered the country?
By air, crossing the border or other means? What airports, trains, or highways do we know he traveled on? - Where else did Hagos travel to, or through, in the state of North Carolina?
- When Hagos applied for and was denied American citizenship why was he not detained then?
- When Hagos applied for and was denied American citizenship, how and who locally was alerted to his whereabouts?
Echoing his sentiments expressed during the initial press conference, Lt. Governor Robinson emphasized, "Our law enforcement agencies deserve unwavering support, transparency, and vital information. Keeping our state in the dark about the arrest of an armed illegal, listed on the terrorist watch list, is not only unacceptable but dangerous. The citizens of North Carolina deserve better."
Continuing his call for accountability, Lt. Governor Robinson added, "During the President and Vice President's visit to Raleigh, I urge President Biden to acknowledge our concerns and provide the answers we seek. Protecting American citizens remains our top priority."
